Internet of Things – What is It, and How is It Useful for You?

By now you’ve heard something about IoT or the  “Internet of things.” If you’re like many of us, you may have dismissed it as something that doesn’t relate to you, or that it’s for people who know a lot about technology. But IoT technology has become surprisingly common in many households.

So what exactly is IoT? Basically, the term “Internet of things”, or IoT is referring to anything that’s connected to the internet. The term is mainly used for devices that you wouldn’t normally expect to be connected to the internet, like a lightbulb for instance. While IoT devices can be controlled and/or programmed by using your smartphone or computer, your smartphone and computer themselves are not considered IoT devices.

DUO Broadband logo

In an announcement this week, Duo County Telecom unveiled their new name and logo: DUO Broadband. Nothing else is changing for the utility and the same local people will be providing the same reliable communication and entertainment services they have offered for over half a century.

“Why a name change? It’s been many years since we’ve only served two counties, and with our fiber optic Internet technology, broadband has become our largest and most popular service,” said Eric West, Director of Marketing. “DUO Broadband reflects this new position. Of course, we still provide TV and Landline Telephone services.”

The updated name and logo will be deployed over the next few months, beginning with the website which can now be accessed at DuoBroadband.com as well as DuoCounty.com. Current customer’s email addresses will not be affected.

“This is not the first name change we’ve gone through,” said Tom Preston, President and CEO. “We were originally known as Duo County Telephone, but that name became limiting with the addition of our other services. While today we are dropping ‘County’ for much the same reason, we are redefining ‘DUO’ to reflect our two most important assets: advanced fiber optic technology and reliable local service.”

The logo puts emphasis on the DUO part of the name: technology and service, as well as keeping a historic reference to the company’s past. The graphic arcs in the “D” were derived from ripples on the surface of water—symbolic of the way Broadband data disseminates and intersects. There is also a subtle representation of the earth in the “D” paying respect to the past logos which all visualized the globe.

“We want our customers to know that nothing else is changing,” said West. “We will still be providing the same services. Our address, locations, and phone numbers are still the same. And DUO Broadband is still the most reliable service provided by your friends and neighbors.”

The folks here at Duo County Telecom recently celebrated the holidays with our annual Christmas party, and CEO Tom Preston addressed the staff about the past year of providing outstanding services with exceptional customer service. We’re grateful to the staff and spouses for their dedication to both the company and customers throughout the year. We look forward to some exciting changes in 2019. Many thanks to the crew at The Barn at Goose Creek for providing a wonderful setting was for the event!

Terry Hadley has worked in the telecommunications industry for the past 37 years. He began working for Cumberland Valley Cable TV in 1981.  The company changed ownership many times throughout his 37-year career – from Cumberland Valley Cable to City TV to Charter Communication until in 2006, Duo County acquired ownership of Charter Communication’s Columbia market and in that acquisition, Terry became an employee of Duo County Telecom.

Terry has been a valued employee at Duo County Telecom working as on Outside Plant Install & Repair Technician in our Columbia Market for the past 12 years. Columbia is Terry’s hometown and the customers highly regard Terry’s knowledge and expertise when it comes to their service.  It is not uncommon for customers to specifically request Terry to install or repair their phone, cable or internet service. The customers trust him. Terry has an excellent rapport with not only the customers of Duo County Telecom but with his fellow employees as well. Terry has been an asset to Duo County Telecom and will be greatly missed.
